Audi EPA Investigation Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Audi under an EPA investigation?

On September 18, 2015, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. and Volkswagen AG received notice from the US Environmental Protection Agency, US Department of Justice and the California Air Resources Board that certain 2.0L 4-cylinder TDI vehicles do not comply with applicable emissions standards. Since then the investigation has expanded to include A3, A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7 TDI diesel models.

Why do the TDI vehicles not comply with applicable emissions standards?

The software detects when a car is undergoing official emissions testing, and turns on emission controls during these tests. When the car is back on the road, the controls are reduced, and emissions return to higher levels.

Why is Audi part of an EPA investigation for Volkswagen?

Volkswagen is the parent company of Audi and used the same software in a undertermined number of Audi diesel vehicles.

What Audi vehicles are impacted by the EPA investigation?

Audi A3 TDI 2.0L (Model Years 2010-2013, 2015) A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7 models are all also on a mandated stop sale list.

If I own one of these models, is it safe to drive?

Yes, these vehicles are safe to drive. The topic under investigation is not safety related, but specific to the emissions output of the vehicle. When a repair is available, Audi and Jim Ellis will notify consumers. You do not need to do anything at this time.

Can Audi Marietta repair my vehicle today?

As of now, Audi hasn't provided a specific remedy to repair vehicles impacted by this investigation. However, Audi is diligently working to develop a remedy and we will work with Audi to notify customers when it is available. Developing a remedy is Audi's top priority.

When can I bring my vehicle in for repair?

Audi is currently working to develop a remedy and will notify consumers when it is available. A specific timeframe is not yet known. When a remedy becomes available, Jim Ellis and Audi will contact you with actions to take to repair your vehicle. You do not need to do anything at this time.

Will the repair provided by Audi decrease fuel economy or change the performance of my vehicle?

At this time, a remedy is currently being developed. Unfortunately, we don't know precisely how the remedy will impact fuel economy or vehicle performance.

If I drive one of the vehicles impacted by this investigation, am I at risk for not passing my state's emissions test?

We don't anticipate that customers will have any issues with state registration or inspection. If you do encounter an issue regarding state inspections, please contact Customer CARE at (800) 822-8987.

Is my vehicle harmful to my health?

The EPA has stated that vehicles impacted by this investigation do not present a safety hazard. Although these vehicles have emissions that exceed standards, they do not present a safety hazard, they remain legal to drive and resell.

What are my options with my vehicle at this time?k

Option 1
Do nothing at this time. Your vehicle is safe and legal to drive. Audi is diligently working on a software fix to correct the issue. When a remedy is available, you will be notified and your vehicle will be repaired at no charge.

Option 2
Wait to see how the situation unfolds. Per the President and CEO of Audi of America, Audi is prepared to do whatever it takes to make things right for Audi TDI owners impacted by the investigation.

Additionally, Jim Ellis Audi Marietta will make sure that special consideration is made over and above anything Audi of America offers. We recommend you wait for the fix, allow us to repair the vehicle and then make a decision about how you would like to move forward once you have all of the facts and any available incentives.

If neither option listed above is to your satisfaction, we invite you to contact us so that we may get a better understanding of your specific needs.

If I have additional questions, where can I go to get them answered?
