When it comes to experimenting with the latest innovations, Audi is always eager to branch out and develop ideas never before introduced to the auto industry. This time around the automaker is looking to get approval for its flashy new turn signal that will definitely catch the attention of other drivers on the road in the greater Marietta, GA area.

Audi's new light design can best be described as appearing similar to the flashy signs seen in a casino. They are composed of a line of LED bulbs that light up in sequence, instead of one light that flashes to indicate a vehicle is turning. Currently the only vehicle this can be found on is the European version of the Audi A8.

Why are they not yet legal in the United States? According to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, a turn signal light must be at least 22 square centimeters. Other automakers that have tackled this same kind of turn signal design have been able to legalize them because when measuring the entire light sequence the size requirement is already met by one of the lights in the series. This is harder to accomplish with Audi's set up of smaller LED bulbs.

Although several automakers have acquired similar technology, Audi sees this as an indication that its innovations ultimately set the bar high for competition. Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America, explains, "When someone looks at those lights on a competitive vehicle, they go, 'They have the Audi lights,' Perfect. They've basically put our brand on their car. We like it. It forces us to be sharper, forces us to be better."1

It could be only a matter of time before we see these LED turn signals available on our favorite new Audi vehicles here at Jim Ellis Audi Marietta. Until then, feel free to stop in for a visit to check out the innovations that we currently have to offer!
