Audi put the federally published fuel economy ratings of their three new Audi TDI clean diesel models to the test this month with the “Truth in 48” cross-country efficiency drive. The challenge helped Audi prove that the Audi TDI models exceed fuel efficiency expectations, surpassing the federally estimated MPG.

The “Truth in 48” challenge consisted of eight drivers split into two teams, one driving the Audi A6 TDI and another driving the A7 TDI. Starting in Audi Pacific in Torrance, California, the two teams traveled non-stop with a time limit of 48 hours to Audi Manhattan in New York City. They were allowed no more than four stops to fill up at Shell Oil Co. with clean diesel fuel.

“Crossing the United States in fewer than 48 hours is a hurdle few have ever contemplated let alone completed,” said Wayne Gerdes, one of the nation’s leading high-mileage driving experts and owner of CleanMPG.com. “To complete that journey while also beating an automobile’s EPA highway fuel economy rating seemed even more impossible.”

Upon arriving in New York City, the A6 TDI posted a 43.561 MPG at an average speed of 62.44, which is 15% better than the highway MPG EPA estimation, showing just how wrong those numbers can be. The A7 TRD boasted 12% better than the EPA highway, with a 42.653 MPG.
