At the New York International Auto Show, a group of 69 international auto journalists chose the Audi A3 as the World Car of the Year. To win this award, the Audi A3 overtook the other finalists, the BMW 4 Series and the Mazda3.

Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler said of the award: "The Audi A6 was the first ever winner of this award and we are delighted that the Audi A3 has repeated that achievement by being voted 2014 World Car of the Year. The Audi A3 showcases Audi's technical competence in all aspects of carmaking, not least in the areas of lightweight technology, drivetrain, mobile infotainment and driver assistance systems."

The judges recognized the A3 for its "superb choice of engines and four body styles." The judges were also impressed by its sharp design, interior materials, and smooth handling that “approaches limousine quality."
