Our neighbors to the south in Florida got a chance to see the autonomous Audi A7 take to the road. Back in 2012, Florida passed a law that allowed self-driving cars to undergo testing on its roads and Audi decided to take advantage of that.

The autonomous A7 headed down Tampa’s Selmon Expressway and put its technology to the test. The highway was closed for the duration of the test, but there were other vehicles on the road to test how the self-driving car handled unexpected traffic. Naturally, the highly-customized A7 aced the test.

Audi calls the self-driving technology Traffic Jam Pilot and plans to commercialize it within five years. Under normal conditions, the technology will work at speeds up to 40 mph, but the Florida test was conducted at only 25 mph.

Florida’s governor Rick Scott got to take some time in the driver’s seat with his hands off the wheel. Check out this video to see the autonomous A7 in action. In the video Joe Waggoner, Executive Director of Tampa-Hillsborough County Expressway Authority (THEA) goes hands-free.

Are you ready for cars that drive themselves? Which Audi car would you love to see this technology in first?
