A few months ago, BMW announced that it would be adding laser-powered headlights as an option to its new i8 plug-in hybrid. Audi, however, doesn’t want BMW to win, so it has vowed to be the first automaker to get laser headlights to the market.

"Thanks to our efficient technology transfer, we will be the first car brand to put laser light into production" said Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi's technical development chief, at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month.

At the show, Audi unveiled the Audi Sport Quattro Laserlight Concept. Hackenburg also announced that the 2014 R18 E-tron Quattro Le Mans racecar will debut in April with laser headlights.

Now before you imagine blindingly bright lasers shooting out of the front of your car, these headlights are more laser-powered than actual lasers. While there will be lasers in the headlight assembly, by the time the light shines out of the front of the car, it will be diffused so you won’t be burning down trees and cutting through cars in your way.

According to Audi, the light will be about three times as bright as an LED and have nearly twice the range. Unfortunately, Audi has not said which Audi model will be the first to get these amazing lights.
