Rumors, rumors, rumors – we at Jim Ellis Audi Marietta hear lots of them regarding the auto industry, but lately we heard one that has us excited, and we think you will be too. Audi will soon be releasing its second-gen R8 model. Exciting news, but no surprise there. However, it seems one of those models could be a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) based on the Lamborghini Asterion. At least, that’s what we heard Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg telling CAR at the Paris Motor Show earlier this month.

Hackenberg, who serves as a member of Audi's Board of Management and leads the automaker's Technical Development, stated quite clearly, "We are able to make the R8 a plug-in hybrid."

He also added, "The Lamborghini Asterion shows this is possible – that car uses the platform of the R8. We will see an increase in efficiency of high-performance cars -- they have to meet CO2 regulation of the future in order to survive."

Hackenberg chooses his words carefully, never really stating that an R8 plug-in electric model will hit the market when the vehicle debuts next year. However, why would he tell us about possibilities unless there was a push to make them become a reality?
