The most historically significant cross-country trip commenced recently since Lewis and Clark. Only this time, instead of a wooden boat, the trip was taken by car—a car without human control.
ComputerWorld described this monumental trip as "the first cross-country trip by an autonomous vehicle." Making the trek from the Golden Gate Bridge to New York City is an Audi SQ5, outfitted with all sorts of autonomous gadgetry from Delphi.
There are cameras and sensors all over the SQ5. Software helps decide what to do from the data, just like a human being would. ComputerWorld quoted Delphi as saying that the software can make “human-like decisions for real-world automated driving.”
A host of individual Delphi technologies work in tandem to make the car go sans human, such as:
? Traffic Jam Assist
? Automated Highway Pilot with Lane Change
? Automated Urban Pilot
? Automated Parking
While the thrill of lining Interstate 70 and seeing the Audi autonomous car fly by without anyone in it, we are unfortunately not to that point yet. We at Jim Ellis Audi of Marietta reassure you that an engineer will be at the wheel for the entire trip, seizing control in case the car becomes "self-aware" and tries to initiate Judgment Day.
