While an all-electric SQ7 SUV is out of the question (for now), Audi is stepping up its game. Word is that the new SUV will feature at V8 TDI engine with electric turbochargers. The new Q7 is taking a direct shot at Mercedes-Benz and BMW turbo-diesel engines. It looks like that shot will be a bullseye.

The new Audi diesel engine is rumored to be pushing 450 hp and a massive 600 lb-ft of torque. Engine changes come as a result of Audi’s new modular-longitudinal platform. With the new platform, powertrain options are open to demand. Anything from a four cylinder inline to a V10 TDI to a twin turbo W12 (which you can find in the Q7’s sibling model, the Bentley Bentayga) is on the table.

As Audi’s largest vehicle, it wouldn’t be surprising if the horsepower and torque is a little more than rumored. Currently, the Q7 offers a 3L TDI hybrid V6 that pushes out 373 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. With electric turbochargers in the mix, it’s entirely possible to hit the rumored numbers.

For those of you interested in an electric vehicle, we at Jim Ellis Audi of Marietta suggest you check out the Q6. With the all-electric Q6, Audi is aiming to compete directly with the Tesla Model X. The Q6 also has more style and a sportier look than the Q7.
