Say hello to Jack. He's fast, sleek, autonomous, and ambitious. He's also a research car.
Jack is the nickname Audi has given to an A7 that will soon make history. If everything goes as planned, the machine will make a 550-mile journey from the San Francisco Bay to CES in Las Vegas—completely autonomously.
Audi tried this same feat last year but, as CNET reported, "the system failed and the driver had to take over." Audi has been hard at work ever since and asserts that Jack’s sensors are “production-ready.”
Speaking of sensors, the performance sedan has been outfitted with every single self-driving feature the German automaker could rustle together. According to CNET, these include:
? Long-range forward radar
? Two rear-facing radar sensors
? Two side-facing radar sensors
? Forward-facing 3D camera
? Four cameras mounted on front and rear corners
The only limitation the autonomous Audi A7 has is that it cannot yet navigate urban areas. When it enters such a location, a driver will take control. Other than that, Jack is on his own.
Jack might not be visiting Jim Ellis Audi of Marietta on his journey, but you sure can!
