Audi A6/A7 Best cars of 15' List: ConsumerCarNews.com

Base price range: $45,725-$107,425

Some Euro-car connoisseurs may not consider Audi the equal of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. They’ve likely not driven an A6 sedan or its designer-duds fastback cousin, the A7. They’re direct rivals to a host of midsize sedan/fastback duos with 5, 6, E, and CLS appellations from the aforementioned German bluebloods. It’s safe to say, though, the Audis are somehow more cars of the moment. Maybe it’s simply a case of disposable income sniffing a trend. More likely it’s proof that BMW and Mercedes — and Cadillac, Jaguar, Lexus, and Infiniti — ought to be worried.

Long, low, lean, and wide, both Audi four-doors project a sophisticated sense of cutting-edge elegance. Their oversized, single-frame grilles ignited an automotive styling trend. Their promotion of all-wheel established a must-have feature in the premium class. And their exquisite cabin decor set the bar for contemporary interior design. With its traditional sedan silhouette, the A6 is the more practical choice and with a base-price range of $45,725-$76,425, the more affordable. It offers the broader range of engines, too, starting with a 220-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and moving up through a 310-horsepower supercharged V-6, a turbodisel V-6 with 428-pound-feet of torque, and, in the high-performance S6, a 420-horse twin-turbo V-8. The four-cylinder comes with front-wheel drive. The brand’s celebrated Quattro all-wheel-drive system is optional there and standard on every other A6. Fuel-economy ratings span 28 mpg city/highway combed with the front-drive four to 29 combined with the diesel.

To create the A7, the automaker essentially planed off the sedan’s rear roofline into a gracefully sloped hatchback profile. It’s positioned it upscale of the A6, with every version getting Quattro and the $66,825 base model starting with the supercharged V-6. There’s a TDI turbodisel, as well as a 420-horsepower S7. Priced from $107,425 is the RS 7 with a 560-horse V-8 and a Corvettelike 0-60-mph time of 3.7 seconds. The S7 and RS7 hammer home their boutique bearing by replacing the three-passenger rear bench in the other A6/A7s with a pair of cozy bucket-type seats, reducing capacity to four. No matter the configuration, every occupant’s treated royally, though road noise and the impact felt over bumps rises as you climb the model ladder and experience lower-profile tires and ever-stiffer suspensions. Fortunately, handling and performance expand as well, making each model a fine foil for its comparable rival-brand competitor.
