The tax man cometh, he giveth, he takeith away?
A change in the Georgia vehicle tax law has eliminated the dreaded "Birthday Car Tax". In GA if you had several cars titled in your name you face the unwelcome tax bill on those cars every year.  It's like a negative birthday reminder.  This tax can amount to several hundred dollars per year per car.

The reality is... i'm getting older... plus I owe a ton of taxes on my cars! :(

The law change recently from a "tax" to a "fee" called TAVT. When you purchase a new or used car in GA the dealer goes to a State web site and inputs your info and the car's info. The State web site quotes the fee amount owed. (Today 7%)  Plus, you do get credit for a trade. This is what you pay.  Easy - Peasy...

There is an additional down side because now even private sales of used cars require TAVT fees to be paid.

No future taxes are owed on that car on your birthday.  Yea!  You can enjoy a Happy Birthday!

The lawmakers did a little give and take on this issue.  The tax rate started at 6.5% and goes up over time by 0.5% to a rate of 8%.  Today the rate is at 7%.  They also made the "tax" a "fee". A "tax" requires voter approval to be raised.  A "fee" can be raised by the legislature without voter approval in the future.  By changing this law they took control of future tax rates out of voter control and gave that control to the legislature. Pretty Slick?
