Audi Unveils the Second Generation R8

By  |
Finally, the all-new, second generation R8 has been revealed this year at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Since its launch in 2007, the R8 proved to be a huge success and has set new and high standards among the supercar class. We thought it wouldn’t get any better, but we were wrong.

The second generation R8 is redesigned from ground-up. “With the new Audi R8, our engineers are bringing accumulated racing expertise from the race track onto the road. No other model of ours evokes more dynamic emotion. The new R8 V10 plus is therefore the most powerful and fastest series-production Audi of all time.” comments Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development at Audi. Initially, the R8 will be launched with the two V10 versions only, the R8 V10 and V10 plus. Pumping 533 bhp and 602 bhp respectively. With the later reaching 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds thanks to the redeveloped quattro system, and a 7 speed S tronic transmission which keeps the car going till it hits its maximum speed of 330 km/h.

Audi didn’t just play around with the engine, they have re-engineered the chassis as well. Sharing its aluminum and carbon fiber chassis with the Lamborghini Huracan results in a dry weight of 1,454 kg. 50 kilogram less than the first generation.

Although the second generation of the R8 shares the same design language as the previous model, this one however is more flat, 40 mm wider, and gets a more muscular look. One distinctive feature from the previous generation is that the side blades are split in two now, and the rear exhaust pipes ditch the circular design to a more muscular square ones. (The sport exhaust system is standard on the V10 plus models and optional on the V10)

On the inside, the R8 gets Audi’s latest digital display – the 12.3 inch virtual cockpit. Not too many buttons are available on the center console for the driver to play with. Everything can be controlled via the steering wheel, giving the impression of driving a race car; minimalistic design with 100 present focus on the driver.

During the show, Audi also showcased two special versions of the R8. The R8 e-tron and R8 LMS. The e-tron version is an all electric, rear wheel drive, 456 bhp and a huge amount of torque. 920 Nm of them. The main highlight Audi is happy about is the range. Thanks to new battery cells, the range is claimed to be doubled compared to the previous model. Which means 450 kilometers! Place your Special Order today at Jim Ellis Audi - Marietta.

The R8 LMS is a GT3 race car which is anticipated to participate in 2016. Although the performance is quite different from its production siblings, Audi says that the LMS shares around 50 percent of its components with the production version.
